Greta Thunberg: I don’t want your hope. I want you to panic!

„I don’t want your hope. I want you to panic!“ – Greta Thunberg, quote from the film “The Forum” by Marcus Vetter (2019). The Forum is a behind-the-scenes documentary about the leading figures of international politics, business, and academia meeting at the World Economic Forum in Davos. Sea levels are rising. Maps are being redrawn. The conditions of people living close to the sea are changing. How high can the water rise? In 2015 I read an article about Tuvalu, where the population lives five meters above sea level. As a precaution, the island nation asked for asylum in Australia and New Zealand for its residents. As a precaution, Australia and New Zealand have declined.

The sea border is a habitat and an important transition area for the climate and for fish (which we were once); and so for gill breathing and lung breathing, depending on where you are coming from or where you are going in your evolutionary journey. As sea levels rise the things that humankind have built at the sea border will sooner or later perish. More space will be needed for all of those living in the sea, due to all the plastic pollution swimming there. Because of this trend, it will become more important to talk about a lot of philosophical questions in the coming decades: Will we eat each other when we have transformed back into fish? Will the bigger ones eat the smaller ones? We will see.

Seaside Soundmap is a dense sound collage composed of silent and loud sounds that people make, build, or hear near this special border along the sea. The collage is a space of discovery and memory, and a place of reflection, to think about changes and transitions. Seaside Soundmap also wants to be a call, directed at those who deny the fact that sea levels are rising and to those who, with full awareness, continue to act with complacency and without any sense of responsibility. In the audio piece Seaside Soundmap I collage snapshots of places near a seashore. I had various collaborators capturing sounds on their cell phones from seashores all over the world, from coastal cities to lonely, wild places near the sea, which I added to my own recordings. The result is a sound experience that lasts 17 minutes, supported by all those beings who were in these ecotones, and all who still are there.
